Match Report

The first scorcher of the season saw Ashley travel to Woodford who won the toss and elected to bat on what is traditionally a low and slow pitch. True to character it lacked the pace and bounce to make scoring anything other than difficult. With only the 3rd ball of the day Woods removed Wodford’s key man Coleburn taking his the edge and requiring keeper Mobley to diving full length to take a stunning catch inches above the deck. With most runs coming off the edge of the bat and extras looking like being the top scorer, the opening attack kept it tight with the entire Ashley side working very hard in the field. The home side suffering from acute inertia reached only 35 after 20 overs, enduring a torrid time trying to score before Holt did the wicked deed and clean bowled Duncan. Tyms quickly repeated the dose by dismissing Barker in a similar fashion in his 14th over off the reel. This proved to be a double edged sword bringing the dangerous Misra and overseas star Caro to the crease who put on 75 for the next wicket. Skipper Rice finally called it a day on Gary Tyms spell after 17 overs of toil in the heat and sent him off to graze looking like the tin man from the Wizard of Oz after a commendable and particularly miserly spell. Woods and Holt returned after a short and similarly restrictive spell from Ciaran O’Doherty to pick up 2 late wickets at the end of the innings. Woodford closed on 136-5, resulting in Ashley picking up a meagre 2 bowling points for all their efforts.

In reply Jamie Khan and Will Lewis put on 45 for the first wicket with shots all round the wicket until an umpiring change saw Khan depart lbw, a decision that was the catalyst for caustic comment about the intelligence of the umpire, who remained above it all.  Lewis followed short after when he clipped a leg stump half volley to short midwicket to bring Liam O’Docherty and his much trumpeted average of 105 to the crease. The average did not last long as he departed to a stunning catch at square leg leaving Coates and Mobley to put on 30 for the next wicket before Coates somehow did not see the man moved to a deeper mid off the ball before and gifted him a catch. Mobley batted well for his 16 before being beaten for pace by Caro.  After a short but productive partnership with Hatchell, Skipper Riceman departed when he too was bowled by Caro. It was left to Hatchell to smash a huge straight six and several other boundaries on his way to another crucial knock of 28 in a partnership with Tyms who made a massive 10 and looks to be making tentative steps toward a return to his once fearsome form. After their late dismissal with just 6 runs required, it was left to Ciaran O’Doherty and Dave Woods to see the lads home on what was a very hard days work.

All in all, a very pleasing effort from the lads in the field backing the bowlers well under a scorching sun. Hopefully in next week’s big game with the league leaders Barrow at HQ, the batting can finally click and convert the good starts into big innings.
