Ashley 3rd XI vs Heaton Mersey 3rd XI

Date: 27 April 2003

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by: Ashley

Batted First: Ashley

Oh Dear!  Ashley crashed out of the Jack Gardner in ignominious fashion.  Ashley won the toss and, acting skipper, Ian Horn took the controversial decision to bat on a very damp wicket.  1˝ hours later 10 cricketing geniuses pointed out that they would never have batted on such a wicket, but Ian was able to justify his decision by pointing out that Brian had told him to do it.

Ian and Barbs toiled manfully to a hard fought 21 before Barbs holed out and Ian followed shortly after.  The procession that followed was only broken by some late entertainment from Mr Wright, who was the only other batter to reach double figures.  Credit must go to Heaton Mersey who bowled straight and look to have a strong attack.

Heaton Mersey’s innings brought some encouragement in the shape of Big John Brownhill, who bowled with great control.  After 6 overs, his figures were 4 for 15 and deservedly so.  If he continues to bowl like that he’ll have shed fulls this season.  At 28 for 4, Heaton Mersey were wobbling and another wicket would have made life interesting, but the 2 lads saw them home safely with plenty of overs to spare.

Things can only get better.
