Ashley vs Knutsford

Date: 26th August 2003

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by: Ashley

Batted First: Knutsford

Match Report

On Saturday Ashley entertained local rivals Knutsford who after a poor start have usurped Ashley in 3rd place thereby providing plenty of incentive to secure our first “Double” of the season. After the square being under water for most of the last two days, it had taken much hard work from Steve Havery our veteran wicket keeper groundsman to get the game on, it was no surprise to see Griff win the toss and invite Knutsford to bat on a worn but firm pitch. Bizarrely, the Ashley boys seemed to think that it was September and they were playing meaningless end of season cricket. However, a closer look revealed that one or two of the more experienced campaigners were exchanging knowing looks whilst admiring the dark and heavy clouds gathering in the distance. Despite losing Blake early to one that lifted a little and was neatly taken by Jackson at gully off Tyms, the visitors batted well on a pitch that was not easy to score on as it dried out. After surviving two difficult chances that taller fielders perhaps may have made!! it took a very sharp piece of fielding by Hall and the strikingly average wicket keeping skills of Rice to send Knutsford skipper Storrow packing after a good knock containing several boundaries. Joking aside, a mention to Ricey for stepping into the breach behind the timbers and doing a good job.

Not long after the run out the heavens opened for an hour with the visitors left on 69-2 after 23 overs. The home side worked like dervishes (well most of them) to give us a chance of getting on again but it was not to be. The visitors not unreasonably did not appear to fancy it given the wet conditions and the possibilities offered by the option of an Ashley run chase so the handshake took place as rain began to fall again.  A rain off was no good to either side but the good news was that Barrow and Barnton game was also abandoned so it is a case of; as you were gentlemen.
