Ashley 3rd XI vs Bramhall 3rd XI

Date: 23 June 2003

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by: Bramhall

Batted First: Ashley

Finally the threes get out of the starting blocks.  A win against Bramhall made it a full set for Ashley over the weekend.  Simpers kept us in it with a typically grinding performance and was only sent back by a ball that shaved the off stick so finely that only the keeper noticed.  Late on in the innings it looked like is wasn't going to be enough as we watched the usual procession back to the pavilion.  A declaration wasn't really an option for stand in skipper, Ian Horn as we struggled past 100 with 8 down.  Then cometh the moment cometh the man.  Dan Slack played the innings of his short career and showed the old lags how it should be done.  A few overs of crisp hitting from the young lad and Ashley had at least got to something that could be defended.  Peter Lawson, the Bramhall stalwart, all round good egg and thorn in the Ashley side for many a year, even stopped talking for a few overs - sweet silence.

Bramhall chasing 140 of 46 overs were still favourites.  Ferris made a quick breakthrough with a dodgy full toss, but it looked an uphill task.  Then up strides Maurice for his first competitive bowl in almost a year, preceded by every conceivable excuse (Don't expect much lads, I'm not fit, I can't see etc etc).  First ball: Slapped down Ferris's throat.  Second ball: Middle stick.  No one would have betted against a hat-trick, but the old dog couldn't deliver.

The rest of course is history.  Only the young batter, Duke, put up any major resistance and Ian Horn wrapped up the innings with his first wickets of the season, to seal a very enjoyable victory.
