Match Report

A beautiful summers day brought Soapytown’s 4th placed Port Sunlight CC to Ashley, who were invited to make use of what proved to be a good pitch. Woods failed miserably to get back into the groove after a week in the sun and was soon hauled off following a three over mauling. This gave Ed Hall a chance to get plenty of overs in, and despite his failure to get reward for his toil he bowled with good pace and swung the ball both ways and somehow couldn’t find the edge. At the other end Brian Birtles in a rare 1st team outing performed admirably bowling with great control and was reward with the wickets of the two openers. Gulliver was caught at the wicket by the chirpy Cannon, and Woods will have travelled home unhappy after missing out on a leg stump full toss that could also be described as a searing Yorker depending on the mood of the correspondent!! Vic Patel making his debut was brought into the attack to replace the luckless Hall and made an immediate impact with his late out swing and clever variations of pace. He struck Favell in front of all three with the departing batsmen not even waiting for the decision, then he teased Martell into giving Cannon his 2nd victim. All had been going well until Patel was shot by a sniper hiding in the long grass and had to retire from the game with a serious looking calf injury. It seems that he has certainly got all the credentials needed to be an Ashley cricketer:- a bit of talent and a limitless capacity to embrace injury!!! Will Lewis completed Vic’s over and went on to bowl well picking up a couple of wickets in a short spell of well flighted off spin. At the other end Coates bowled very straight with decent pace clean bowling 2 and having another caught in probably his best spell this season.

Ashley’s reply was short and swift after the early loss of Lewis who chipped up a simple chance to square leg to bring Bobby Cannon to the crease. He and Griffiths immediately started to smote the bowling to all parts with shots all round the wicket. The excellent outfield gave full value to the batsmen with Cannon in particular driving through the covers with confidence on the even paced track.  Eventually Cannon was caught off Robins moments after the appreciative home  crowd had been informed of his impending half century….. Doh!!! Coates joined the skipper and indulged himself with several fine boundaries and a huge six over midwicket. Oh OK, it was a bit cowish but still it was a good effort!!  Unfortunately Kevin was unable to get the winning runs with another six that would have earned an extra batting point instead managing only a four. Maybe it is the hairdresser’s car he drives around in that is draining his strength?

It was a good victory for the lads and encouraging to chase a modest total without the usual stutters. In the field the whole team fielded like dervishes giving very little away and the bowling showed its depth today when effectively missing the opening attack. It will have to be more of the same and some next week when we travel to 2nd placed Barnton.
