Match Report

Ashley left the ducks to paddle around the square at headquarters to make the trip down the M6 to sunny Sandbach. Covers and impressive drainage gave a good chance for the game to go ahead provided the rain stopped. It was never hard enough to come off if we were playing but the presence of two league umpires dictated that the rain must stop completely before play could commence. Griffiths won the toss, and after looking at the grey blanket sky invited Sandbach to bat. There was a delay of almost two hours before play finally got under way after much prevarication from the umpires who eventually agreed a 50 over game.

As always at Sandbach, prima facie the pitch appears hard enough but seemingly bounces around the ankles more often than not. Tyms and Woods opened the bowling and soon got amongst them before rain interrupted the innings with the home side on 27-1. An early tea was taken to avoid losing further overs from the game. On resumption of play Tyms (3-30) took charge with a very tidy spell, by far his most impressive of the season as he regularly beat the bat and kept up the pressure. Holt (2-18) then joined the attack and between them forced 2 run outs calmly effected by Lewis and Hatchell respectively. The home side declined the extra 2 overs on offer to give them a chance of the draw points and declared at 80-8.

The visitors replied by sending out a revised and aggressive batting order in the run chase. Despite the early loss of Coates, Khan and Flynn responded with a vital stand of 38 with runs being scored all round the wicket. When both batsmen looked set, Flynn was removed by a smart piece of glove work by the impressive Redgate off the slow right arm-balls of Cole, who then removed Khan in a similar fashion shortly thereafter. A silly run out followed as a result of a very poor call leaving the unfortunate Lewis stranded without facing a ball. Will, having fielded in the damp outfield for most of the day to protect a hand injury sustained during a days racing, did not have the best of days. When Shallcross removed his bunny Griffiths with one that both kept low and took a big inside edge, Gary Tyms scuttled off to the dressing room for the Ashley worry beads. They were not needed however, as Darren Hatchell set about the dangerous Shallcross putting him in the field for 4 twice and a big six over square leg in recording 23 not out and probably his best innings for the 1X1 in the context of the game and the conditions. Hall (8 no) remained calm and ever watchful before stroking the final boundary through mid off in the penultimate over to see Ashley home for a 19 point win which saw them storm to 2nd in the table after most other fixtures were abandoned.

Whilst Ashley were most definitely the keener of the two sides, credit must be given to Sandbach for getting a game in when it could have been easier to accede to the umpires and call the game off earlier in the day.
