Venue: Knutsford

Toss won by: Knutsford

Batted First: Ashley

Match Report

Saturday saw Ashley travel to local rivals Knutsford desperately hoping to play a full game of cricket following the rain driven despondency of the opening weeks of the season. Knutsford won the toss and invited Ashley to bat first on what looked like a bowlers wicket. After losing O’Doherty for a watchful duck early on when he was caught in the crease to one that kept a little low, Ian Mobley (25) and Kevin Coates (27) set about the opening attack with relish putting on 50 for the second wicket with a selection of pulls and drives all around the wicket. Mobley departed LBW to Cook not playing a shot and Coates shortly thereafter to leave Ashley on 63-3 after 20 overs with honours fairly even. A fine spell by Cook (16-4-43) and Walker kept Ashley under tight control with skipper Jon Griffiths (38) and Bobby Cannon (18) struggling to get the ball away. A change in bowling proved to be a major turning point when Knutsford skipper Storrow brought young leg spinner Morphet into the attack and he was promptly mullered into the field for 17 and 11 runs respectively from his two overs. Ashley regained some momentum, and pressed on with some useful partnerships particularly between Ed Hall (20) and Hatchell (9). Gary Tyms (5) tried and failed to blast Ashley toward the elusive 5th batting point but at least registered as a batsmen this year after a recent string of ducks!! Ashley closed on 163-9, which looked a good score on a slow wicket with some uneven bounce. An excellent tea provided by our hosts led Tyms to declare, “I could do some serious damage to that if only we were batting second!!”

In Knutsfords’ reply Blake and Storrow rode their luck with a couple of edges going wide of slips early on before Woods, after a succession of close shouts for LBW against Storrow finally convinced the umpire to direct him to the pavilion with the score at 18-1. Both Tyms and Woods (4-19) bowled a tight line and length, and were well backed up by a good out-fielding, as Ashley turned the screw. Woods struck again in the 14th over to remove Walker, that saw him departing muttering, “how did I miss that?” One mans leg stump full toss, is another mans in-swinging yorker! Sheridan was removed for a golden duck, again by Woods, thereby offering the chance of a hat trick. Danger man Sheldon survived the hat trick ball only to be clean bowled by Hall in his first over, and was quickly followed by opener Blake two balls later. Given that Hall had started his spell with two wides, to end up with 2-5 at then end of the over was some achievement.  A double change brought Nick Holt into the attack and he immediately delivered the goods. Still bowling within himself after trouble with his dodgy Fleetwood, Nick picked up 3-27, yet he remained unhappy with his performance. What will he be like when he is bowling well? Keeper Mobley took a blinding catch diving to his right off the variation of Kevin Coates before Woods took a catch off Holt to close the innings after some resistance from Morphet and Barker.

Credit to all the lads for a good solid performance with everybody contributing to the 24 point win. Griffiths also deserves a mention, not but his clubbing of a young and inexperienced bowler, but for his bowling and fielding changes. Each of which seemed to bring about a wicket. With the news of a good second team win a great night ensued win.   Almost a full turnout from the 1X1 and 2X1 enjoyed plenty of beer and a fine late curry to bring to an close a most agreeable day.
