Ashley vs Hale

Date: Saturday 11th July 1914

Venue: Hale

Toss won by:

Batted First: Ashley

Ashley visited Hale on Saturday and provided the home side with an exciting afternoons cricket. Ashley batted first and ran up a total of 120. CH Syers gave a stylish display for 21 and T Shelley obliged with a neat 25. The next highest scorers were W Watson 18 (not out). C Vickers 15 and T Smith 12. The fun commenced when Hale came into bat and the whole side was dismissed for 19. C Vickers six for 12 and T Smith four for two were unplayable. Praise is due to T Woolley for his wicket keeping, three catches being taken behind the sticks. After all cricket is a very uncertain game and it is not likely this would happen again. Whilst giving Ashley every credit for their fine performance Hale were unfortunate in being unable to recover from a bad start.

2nd XI match report

Ashley 2nd vs Hale 2nd

Date: Saturday 11th July 1914

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by: Hale

Batted First: Hale

The second eleven met at Ashley and a very close game was seen.  Ashley winning by 85 to 81. Hale 2nds won the toss and were three wickets down for 11. However a vigorous if rather lucky 28 by H Whittaker put a different complexion on matters. RE Gibbon showed well with 10 (not out) and C Yates very unluckily trod on his wicket when going nicely. L Hall and JH Ainsworth bowled well for the home team. The chief scorers for Ashley were AJ Syers who pulled some fine forcing shots out of his locker for 24 and RJ Broadsmith (29) batted gracefully. W Smiths 15 runs were also very opportune. CE Fashant, E Hart and W Warburton all made good use of the ball for Hale.
